The idea
This semester, I have taken a leave of absence from Rice University and have decided to go to Santiago, Chile until December. There I will be living in the city and pursuing an internship in an organization that interests me. For me, this semester is about gaining real, professional experience and learning more about social entrepreneurship, microfinance, economic and political development, and leadership.
I decided against doing a regular study abroad program because I felt like this would be a bigger challenge, I would save more money, and I'd get the chance to see a country my way - no big formal program, no other Americans to speak English with, no tuition.
While to many my idea seems a little off the wall and capricious, I think it's very deliberate and strategic. I want to come back to Rice in the Spring having been challenged and knowing more about what I want to do.
Here's to a wonderful semester. If you are joining me from the Oaxaca ride, welcome back. If you are a new reader, I hope you enjoy my writing throughout these months.
I'm back!
